What to ask (and what we’ll ask) when commissioning a piece of jewelry.

Bespoke is the way to go if you want a custom-made piece of jewelry designed and crafted just for you.

From the design to the materials, every part of bespoke jewelry is designed around your vision, lifestyle, and specifications. The result is one of a kind - and the possibilities are (almost) endless.

The vast potential of bespoke is what makes it exciting… but if you’ve not commissioned jewelry before, the process can feel daunting. Where to start when you can have almost anything you want?

So here’s our guide to bespoke jewelry; where to start, what to ask, and what to expect…

Step one - choosing a jeweler

You’re on the Skydog blog, so the chances are high that you like our style. Contemporary fine jewelry infused with earth magic is our thing. That means characterful gemstones, lasting materials, and a modern, luxurious touch.

It’s important you choose a jeweler whose style and expertise align with your vision. All jewelers have signature styles and skills, and a good jeweler won’t be happy to copy another brand’s distinctive look. Like any craft, you’ll get the best results from your commission if you choose a designer who is an expert. For instance, if you want gemstones, particularly unusual ones, you’re in the right place with Skydog.

At this stage, you should ask to see some examples of bespoke pieces your jeweler has made. We share most of our bespoke pieces on our Instagram, and will always be excited to share examples with you. We'll always be honest about what we do best, and we'll be excited

Step two - share your vision

Once you've found a jeweler you like, the next step is to discuss your vision for the piece. We’ll ask you questions about what you're hoping for, including the type of jewelry, materials, style, and budget.

Feel free to show us references, including which pieces from our existing collections or past bespoke work you like. We can even decipher the briefest and messiest of scribbles…

A bespoke design is a collaboration between the jeweler and client. We’ll bring your dreams to life, infused with our signature touch.

Step three - choose the gemstones

If you want your piece to include gemstones, now we’re at the fun bit…

You know how we feel about gemstones. From a sparkling diamond to a piece of turquoise, a gemstone is more than just its beauty. From metaphysical properties to meaning to lifestyle, here’s what to consider when picking your stone.

  • Lifestyle

Some gemstones are known for their durability, while others are more delicate and may require extra care. There are setting tricks we can use to protect more delicate stones, but you may still prefer to choose an alternative if you have an active lifestyle.

  • Properties

Gemstones have a long history of amazing properties, from the spiritual to the physical. If you’d like to infuse your bespoke piece with symbolism, empowerment, or healing, we can suggest gemstones with unique qualities to suit.

  • Personal Meaning

Some people love to choose stones based on their birthstone or zodiac sign, while others may have a special connection to a particular stone. Perhaps a sapphire was your grandmother's favorite gemstone, or turquoise reminds you of the ocean where you grew up.

  • Aesthetics

Of course, not all gemstones have to mean something. Sometimes we use them because they just look great. Unusual gemstones are our thing, so we can help you source something really different - maybe even a stone you’ve never heard of.

Classic styles such as a signet or band ring, or a simple pendant, become something incredible when set with an unusual gemstone.

At this stage, you can ask us to provide recommendations for gemstones based on your preferences and budget. We’ll also share the properties and meanings of different stones.

We’ll ask you about your lifestyle and wearing habits, and we’ll be happy to show you as many examples as you like. The choice of gemstone is a personal one, so take your time and choose the one that speaks to you the most.

Step four - review our ideas

Once we have a good understanding of your vision, we’ll present a series of proposals for the design.

Usually we’ll present a series of initial hand sketches first, followed by a computer render of the chosen designs.

At this stage, be prepared to give honest and detailed feedback. We want the piece to be perfect for you, and we’re happy to make any changes you’d like.

We’ll have agreed on a budget at the start of your project, and at this stage we’ll confirm the final price based on the finished weight and materials. At this stage you can ask us about how changing the design, choice of metal, and gemstones might impact the price or look, and we can propose some different options if necessary.

Step five - keep in touch

The design, the materials, and the price have been signed off… so now we stay in touch!

We’ll confirm the time scale when we sign off the design. Depending on the complexity of the piece or the materials we need to source,

When your piece is completed, we’ll send you photographs and invite you to view your piece in person. We want you to be delighted with your final piece, so if there’s anything you’re not sure about at this stage, just ask.

Commissioning a bespoke piece is a thrilling process. Even if the possibilities feel overwhelming, we’re here for you the whole way. Together, we’ll bring your wildest or most meaningful visions to life!
